Jaali Boutique
Kate spends much of the off-season travelling through India, hunting out unique pieces to stock in the boutique.
The jewellery is gold-plated, some gemstone-set, designed and produced in Rajasthan. There’s a rotating edit of handicrafts and soft cashmere shawls, and an ever-changing line of one-off vintage finds — engraved brass tiffins, framed prints of Hindu deities, art deco lamps, 1950s tinware.
Kate graduated from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and went on to work as a costume designer for film and a stylist for fashion editorials. Friends began asking her to make bespoke pieces, and her own lingerie and clothing lines followed — a decade of limited-edition ranges sold in Cape Town, New York and Kerala.
The Jaali collection is wearable, feminine, elegantly cut: a simple linen dress, or a silk satin piece for evenings. There’s a small menswear range too, in cotton, linen and hemp.
Homeware is a natural extension of the label — block-printed bed linen with contemporary, mid-century, Asia-inspired motifs. Summer-weight cotton quilts, pillow and cushion slips, and the dohar: a traditional three-layer muslin blanket from Rajasthan.
Alongside her own work, Kate stocks small runs from fellow designers she admires — Bengali cotton scarves, silk kimonos, cotton day dresses and jumpsuits, and bikinis made for Goan beaches.
